Java – Part IV

Java – Part IV

The evening after you left Java
I’m walking past the viewing window
and – wouldn’t you know it –
there’s Mt. Merapi and its
two sister peaks without
the clouds and haze, clear
as bells. The sunset is
classic Jogya with hot pinks,
fuchsia and chartreuse. Of course
the moon is also out and there
is a far-distant storm cloud
lightning-show like the summit’s
halo. Softly, the gamelan
players start tuning up
and then the singer begins,
howling like a banshee.
