Java – Part III

Java – Part III

Since it’s raining it must
be the afternoon and the
leaves go bananas undulating
in the wind like the fins
of a trigger fish. Inside
our room it’s safe and so
peaceful – the patients in
the Frangipani recovery ward
rest contentedly. On TV
there’s always soccer . . .
On the bed’s the bedspread.
After the storm, iguanas
strut out onto the tips
of palm fronds for a push-
up contest and a stampede
of dragonflies fills the air.
On our shrine, the lotus
leaf quivers in the air-
conditioner wind, nodding
neither “yes” nor “no”.
